Read Between the Lines: Building Visual Literacy Skills

This workshop will introduce you to the world of visual literacy, helping you become a more discerning and effective communicator. Learn how to navigate the ever-growing landscape of visual information, develop critical analysis skills, and use visual media to strengthen your research and presentations. This workshop is particularly relevant for those in the arts but is also highly relevant to everyone in our highly visual 21st-century society, as most of us engage with great amounts of visual information in our day-to-day lives.

By the end of this workshop, attendees will be able to:

1. Understanding Visual Literacy Concepts

  • Define visual literacy and explain its importance in the context of academic research, artistic practice, and everyday life.

2. Interpreting Visual Content in Academic Research

  • Identify and interpret visual sources (e.g., photographs, artworks, charts, etc.) in the context of academic research and scholarly inquiry.

3. Evaluating Sources for Visual Literacy

  • Assess the credibility, relevance, and quality of visual sources, especially when conducting research for assignments or projects.

4. Exploring Library Resources for Visual Research

  • Become familiar with library resources and tools for finding and using visual materials (e.g., image databases, archives, digital collections).

5. Navigating Ethical Issues in Visual Media

  • Develop an awareness of ethical issues in using and sharing visual media, including issues of copyright, plagiarism, and consent.

By the end of the workshop, students should feel more confident in their ability to engage with, interpret, and use visual content, while also understanding how to apply these skills in academic contexts.
